Roadblasters
System: Genesis
Release Date: November 1991
Developer: Sterling Silver Software
Publisher: Tengen
Genre: Action
Drive fast and blow up whoever is in your way in Roadblasters! Why are you doing this? Who knows! But drive fast and blast is what you’re going to do. Can you get through all 50 levels and be a Roadblasters champion?
I didn’t realize until after I finished that Roadblasters already had a release on the NES. I didn’t like that one either. Whoops, did I just spoil the ending? You drive down the road with a gun attached to your vehicle. You need to blow everything to smithereens before you run out of gas. Grab green and red orbs to replenish your fuel. Some enemies, the orange ones, can be killed. Others, the purple ones, can not be killed.
A plane will occasionally drop a powerup to you, but you’ll likely miss it. Even if you catch it, the next time you are hit by a bullet, mine, or run into an enemy, you’ll lose it. Get to the end of the level and you can go to the next one. After every four or five tracks, the colors and scenery change. That’s the best it’s got.
Graphics: 1.5
The car turning looks kind of smooth, but it’s not a good looking game overall.
Sound: 1.5
The music is alright, but the sound effects aren’t.
Gameplay: 1.0
The controls are poor and don’t feel good.
Difficulty: 1.0
Everything comes out of nowhere and there’s very little time to react.
Fun Factor: 0.5
I didn’t like this, but maybe you will. I doubt it.
Overall Rating: 1.1
Roadblasters earns a D. Stay away from this, just as you should stay away from the NES version.
