System: NES
Release Date: January 1990
Developer: Konami
Publisher: Konami
Genre: Flight Sim
It’s the 90s, so it’s time for sequels, this time with Top Gun: The Second Mission. Konami let us down with the first game and the second isn’t any better. I’m actually extremely upset that this was released as a full priced title.
The Second Mission gives you three levels of action. The levels are extremely short, but they’re incredibly deadly. Until you memorize the enemy patterns (which will take only a few tries), you’ll get wiped out. Then you fight a boss, which takes a stupid number of hits. Then it’s in for everyone’s favorite landing on the air carrier. It’s even easier this time.
The second level introduces unavoidable trees that appalled me so much, I quit playing. I’m in a jet fighter, I’m not flying anywhere near ground level. Stupid design choices all around. The barrel rolls don’t work too well. Firing missiles is a pain in the butt. Just infuriating.
There is a dogfight mode. You can play against the computer or against another human. It’s really stupid, though. Whoever gets the first shots in wins. This will inevitably be the computer player. This game is so bad.
Graphics: 1.0
Nothing has gotten any better, which is disappointing.
Sound: 1.0
The music is bad. The sound effects are overpowering and annoying.
Gameplay: 1.0
There’s somehow even less to do than the original title.
Difficulty: 1.0
All three levels will kick your butt and you’ll get very irritated while playing.
Fun Factor: 0.0
The original was simply playable. This is barely playable and not at all enjoyable.
Overall Grade: 0.8
Top Gun: The Second Mission earns a D. This game sucks and Konami should be ashamed of themselves for releasing it.
