Dudes With Attitude
System: NES
Release Date: 1990
Developer: American Video Entertainment
Publisher: American Video Entertainment
Genre: Puzzle
Collect all the jewels you can to solve the levels in Dudes With Attitude. Choose one of six floating disembodied heads to explore the Caribbean and make your riches. There are 32 mazes of radical non-stop action for you to conquer here.
The six different dudes play the same, but they each have their own leitmotif. I thought this would play a role in the gameplay, but it doesn’t. The gimmick here is that the character constantly moves back and forth either left and right or up and down, depending on the level. The only way you can collect the jewels is if you are the same attitude or color they are. In order to change color you must go through an attitude converter.
Once all of the jewels have been collected, a door opens. Head through and win the level. This isn’t so easy, as there are enemies, as well as the clock you have to battle against. You are able to take one hit, but the next one will kill you, unless you touch a hospital square in between. Gumsplats will get in your way, but you can take them out if you have the right attitude.
There is an edit mode, which gives you all of the different set pieces. You can build your own, like I did and keep making it impossible until you finally find a way to finish it. You need a boat to go over water.
Graphics: 1.0
The sprites are all small, single colored, and not very detailed.
Sound: 1.0
The character themes go away after you start playing.
Gameplay: 1.5
There are a lot of different rules and tile pieces in the puzzles for you to get around.
Difficulty: 2.0
Sometimes the level is clever and will beat you a few times. Sometimes it’s because the controls are so finicky.
Fun Factor: 1.5
I was bored at some points and into it at others, but it wasn’t my favorite.
Overall Rating: 1.4
Dudes With Attitude earns a D+. I don’t know why they have an attitude, but I suppose there is some enjoyment you can grab out of this one, but if it doesn’t hook you quickly, feel free to bail.
